The real folk blues...
Finished Metaman at work today. It was a very interesting book, and while it became a bit repetitive near the end (and sounded like a sales pitch the whole way through), it seemed relatively well researched and brought up some interesting thoughts about the integration of man and machine, the "global superorganism" we are creating, and problems/issues that face society now and in the future. Stock seems to put great stock (haha) into global economics, and its effects on politics, both domestic and international. He mentions a couple of times the effects of implementing a "free market economy", which is a concept I only vaguely understand. Sure, it's a little outdated (the book was published in 1993), but it's still an interesting read. I think I would particularly recommend it to Mr. Carter and Mr. Hocking, both people who I'm sure would find much to disagree with, and hopefully some things to agree with.
So we're into another federal election...the first one I could vote in. Unfortunately, it looks (from the sign placement on hwy 7) that I am part of the "Oak-Ridges/Markham" riding, and not the "Unionville/Markham" riding, so I can't actually re-elect Mr. McCallum.
Oh well.
Despite my gut reaction to vote for anything new (if only because it would mean a change of national color, of sorts), it looks like I'm leaning towards the "Fiberals" right now (that word being the reason Jack whats-his-name lost my vote...I can't vote for a guy who makes up stupid words like that! Now, if he had come up with "scrumtrillescent"... :P). I dunno...I can't trust the look of Steven Harper...something about him...
And yes, I know basing your vote on peoples' made-up words and looks are not the best way to go about deciding the leader of your country, but damn it that's my right! :P
The most unfortunate thing is that none of the new guys are funny. Jean Chretien had his accent going for him (and his convoluted way of answering questions), Joe Clark...was Joe Clark! (funny in and of itself), and Stockwell Day was just too laughably fundamentalistic...plus his wood-chopping spots were just downright hilarious (and Air Farce managed to do some good parodies of them).
Unlike previous elections, it's no longer "vote for the most funny guy"...Canadians, we might actually have to think about the issues here! I mean, even the provincial election was easy - what's funnier than having a Martian kitten-eater as a Premier? I rest my case.
Brief summary - this election sucks...bring back funny people.
I'm done.

I think I'm turning Japanese...
Alright, so I guess lyrics from an anime opening would be more appropriate for the title, but I'm too lazy to open up a file and watch the intro :P
Yesterday I attended my first anime con - Anime North.
Didn't get there 'til almost noon, and since I hadn't pre-registered (cuz I wasn't going for the whole weekend), I headed for the registration line...which stretched along the wall of the Toronto Convention Center and around the corner. Cosplay abounded, as I was sure it would (in fact, this was one of the reasons I decided to go...wanted to see if it really was all fat girls in sailor scout uniforms :P) - some of the costumes were very good, some were...not. Lots of ugly people, and quite a few "but the face"s...only a couple of really good looking people, and we managed to hit some of them up for pics.
After an hour in line, I managed, luckily, to run into Mr. Carter immediately (Fontaine and Hui, who kindly gave me a ride, had left me to fend for myself in the reg line while they skipped into the pre-reg line and into the con). Walked around, saw more cosplayers (this year Naruto and Inuyasha seemed to be the dominant animes represented). On the topic, since when did Kill Bill become an anime? I guess there really aren't too many restrictions placed on cosplay...but come on guys, this is an anime con, not a tarantino-con. For shame.
Anyway.
Saw some good art, spent way too much money (curse you Hui for pointing out the Bebop complete manga box set!), and, of course, watched some anime:
-Azimanga Daio (or however you spell it): completely incoherent, but still not as bad as Excel Saga. Cute, but not really worth my time.
-Midori no hibi: a very very weird anime about some punk high school kid who gets an extremely overzealous stalker girl for a right hand. The girl is really annoying, and I found the obviously-CG parts very poorly executed, but it's just so weird that I'm compelled to watch it, if only to find out what happens in the end.
-Witch Hunter Robin: this anime, to me, felt a lot like Hellsing, with the whole gothic-secret-hunting-organization-in-modern-day-city. Unfortunately, the first couple of episodes were kinda boring, and the fight scenes are completely uninspired. If it weren't for my fascination with the dark, gothic-esque look (hence my fascination with Dark City, LXG [which, at times, /looked/ good, even if the movie as a whole sucked], Hellsing, and Hellboy and Van Helsing, which I still need to see), I'd never give this one a second chance; as it stands, I have HDD space to burn, so I'll probably watch a few more episodes in the hopes that it will get better.
Also got introduced to Para Para (? - is this right?), aka DDR Mach 2...with hands!!!
Ok, so it's ONLY hands, not feet, but it still looks damn spiffy. Now I wish I had a PS2 :(
And yes, I am a sad little man, in case you were wondering.
Stopped quickly at the J-pop/J-rock dance...where people weren't really dancing all that much, or well...and to think most of these people are probably closet (or open) DDR fanatics...shame on you all!
After hearing half of the song from the "Tainted Donuts" AMV, they cranked up the volume to ear-splitting levels, and we...well...split.
Saw the Masquerade, which was supposed to be some huge thing, apparently. It was, unfortunately, quite unimpressive and boring, especially from 20 or so rows back. The co-host decided to adopt a very obnoxious high-pitched voice, and I really just wanted to tear her vocal cords out (as did 99% of the audience, I'm sure). While one, maybe 2, of the skits were kinda funny, the rest was just stupid. It's really just a chance to showcase costumes, and you can get a better look just walking around the con anyway. The most exciting part was when the lightning storm knocked out the power and we sat in darkness for 20 minutes. I wish I had fallen asleep at that point.
Ended the night with some of us (Hui, Tom) watching yaoi, and the others watching hentai (purely out of curiosity, of course). It was very softcore, and the "plot", such as it was, was completely ridiculous. Had a good laugh insulting it, and that was it. We were out of there in less than 20 minutes. Apparently, the yaoi wasn't too hot either - just a bunch of transvestites.
Ah well...guess I'll just need to get my pr0n fix from REAL porno. ;)
All in all, a fun day, albeit very hard on my wallet. Thank God CN-Anime isn't for another 3 months, so I'll have time to replenish my funds. And hopefully I'll be better rested for it...I was ridiculously tired yesterday.
Pics will be posted later today, including some hot shots of Font and Chiu in a choker we found lying around ;)
Addendum: pics are up - just hit the links in the main post.

I want you to take me out...
After the encroaching attack by Angelfire seized my images, I decided to follow the advice of someone commenting on Jodi's blog (too lazy to go back and find your name, whoever you are :P) and hit up IMGspot for some image hosting. And now this blog is back to lookin' pretty...just like me ;)
Last night I saw Troy with a girl I met a year or two ago while doing RCM History lessons (in fact, it was just her, myself, and our instructor for most of the year :P). Haven't really talked with her since, so it was good to just hang out and swap first year stories (actually, we ended up talking more about career plans and psychology/neuroscience than rehashing stories from school...)
I must say, except for the stupid impossible-to-find parking garage, her apartment building is sweet.
It's in a mall (of sorts...)
Walk down a short corridor from the elevators in the main lobby, and you're standing next to a Second Cup, across from an LCBO, with a full Loblaws below you and a cineplex above you. There are a few more stores and restaurants, maybe 20 in all, so it's not a full mall, but it's still pretty awesome; there's really no reason to ever leave the building.
If only our place in Kingston was like that...

Everybody's looking for a drug that heals...
Yesterday I was driving home from Chez Carter (another round of Axis and Allies...something like 12 hours in, and only on the 2nd turn >.<), and was flipping through the radio stations and I heard a familiar tune...
Turns out Mix was playing Stabilo Boss! ^__^
Hopefully people will start requesting them, they'll get some airtime on the Edge, hit the Thursday 30, and then get a more major release of their first album (as well as a second one). I can't wait 'til these guys hit it big...and come to Kingston/Toronto again.

Eat that chicken...
Last night I crept backstage with Mr. Hazelton to watch Church St. and Wind Symphony perform at the MDHS spring concert night thingie.
Oh...man...
Wow. Having not heard all that much Church St. in the past, I'm not really qualified to judge their performance, but even I could tell that the trumpets, at the very least, had no idea what "playing together" meant.
Wind Symphony, though...that was shameful. Coming off our incredible 3 years, last night's performance was embarrassing. True, I was listening in the Green Room, so some of the sound might have been a bit wonky (and every other time I've been hearing us from within the band, which definitely biases you), but...where do I begin? Let's take Jupiter, for example: the one piece I actually know relatively well, having played it. Now, we didn't play it perfectly, but I think we did a decent job at it. They started way too fast, the clarinet pseudo-violin opening was a complete mess (and yeah, I know we messed it up too, but not nearly that badly), intonation was suspect for much of the piece, and they massacred the chorale. Due to the ridiculous tempo they set, there wasn't much hope of them staying together...
It was shocking to be the audience, for once, of Wind Symphony, and hear how amateur we really sound. I'm only hoping that we actually did sound better when I was a part of it...
Best part of concert was the people. Most notably, Nitasha and Nikhil, who I haven't seen in waaay too long. Even Edgell showed up for a brief time. Spent some time talking with Mr. Jull...great man all around. Unfortunately, due to all the usual concert-night craziness, didn't really get a chance to talk to Mr. T, but I'll chat him up when I re-visit the hallowed halls of MDHS (which I'll be doing today and Monday, hopefully)
Oh yeah, and Charles Mingus is a genius. That is all.

Domo arigato mr. robato...
While researching for my first assignment (1000-word essay, "Is the Turing Test sufficient to determine if a computer can think?" - if you have an opinion on the topic, please leave a comment...let's start a little friendly debate here), I came across this gem.
It's a chat transcript between some guy at Drake, and a computer program designed to respond to chat messages while the author was logged off.
Absolute hilarity.

She's a brick and i'm drowning slowly...
Wow...been a while since I've listened to W&EA...such a good album. Alex (Spence, a man none of you know and I haven't seen in years) might possibly have been correct in calling it the best album of the 90s. If you disagree, you're a cumquat.
So last night saw Tom and I sitting in Karin's basement while her jazz band rehearsed for 4 hours. We were supposed to be out of there by 8, but by the time we regrouped at my house (had to drop off my car) to go bowling, it was past 10 >.<
Still, it was a fun night...sucked ass at bowling, but Mimi was so much worse it almost made me look like I'd bowled before (I have, a decent number of times, and that's the real sad part). Luckily, Tom and Canny were also not playing too well...and yes, Tom, I'm sure the lane wasn't oiled properly (cue self-serving attributional bias).
After that, it was bubble tea with Dan, Matt, and Scott; realized that even with a year of university under our belts, we haven't changed a bit. Good times.
For some reason the comments are down...like every problem in my life, I'm going to wait and see if it fixes itself.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise...
Fuck you, Angelfire.
I need to find somewhere else to host the photos for this site...any ideas?
And while I'm at it, fuck Sheridan. What the Hell is a paltry $0.25 raise? I've gotten at least $0.50 every other year.
*sigh* oh well. Got tomorrow off, so if anyone wants to do something, let me know.
Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention - finished Possessing Genius. Excellent book, I recommend it to anyone interested in Einstein, brains, or a good science-laden story. Waiting for Metaman to get in at the library, then after that (or before, if I get in touch with the Toms) will be the books I mentioned in an earlier post.
Addendum: What fuck? My pics are back - no longer white boxes with extremely pixelated "Image hosted by Angelfire" written in them...weird.

Being poor was not such a drag in hindsight...
So yesterday I took the day off work - God bless my manager and his "we'll take you whenever you can come in this week".
Awesome.
I bummed around the house for a bit, then received a msg from Mr. Carter, asking whether I would like to join him in visiting our little Korean friend at MDHS. Since I had nothing better to do, I decided to join him. Had a nice chat with Ms Corry on the topic of an objective reality, among other things. I've come to the realization that I have a pathological tendency to automatically contradict anyone else's viewpoint, even if said viewpoint is shared by me. I then continue to play Devil's Advocate long past the point where my argument ceases to make any sense. I'm gonna need to work on that a little, and curb my enthusiasm for arguing.
Met up with Mr. Hazelton while at MDHS, and after driving some people home, he joined our little posse. With about $65 between the 4 of us, we set out to have a good time.
First order of business was dinner - it was about 5:30 by this point, and we were hungry. After discovering that hot pot was tros cher, we eventually settled on a noodle place at Commerce Gate. We never got there, though. As we walked past KBBQ, we couldn't resist ourselves, and headed in.
A couple of hours later, we got back into the car for more random driving around. With no definite place in mind, we ended up at the mall, where we window-shopped for a while and insulted Celine's taste in hats and once again had the dog-eating debate.
Hit Starbucks afterwards, where I had to pay for a $3.50 apple cider via Interac. After that, more random driving (after dropping Celine off), then it was back home to move my Kingston furniture from the living room into the garage, for ease of loading into the truck today.
Gonna be in K-town today moving furniture into the house, then it's sayanora to Gary, Brian, Eileen and Winnie for the next 2 months. I'm sure you guys will have fun down there.
That's all from me now...catch ya later.
